Sugar Mercado, Naging Emosyonal Habang Kinikwento Ang Nangyari Sa Kanya Matapos Lisanin Ang Shobiz Industry
In 2007, Sugar Mercado left the showbiz industry to build her own family, yet her dream was short-lived. The 31-year-old celebrity is known for her comical personality in front of the camera, but who would have thought that she is hiding her struggles with every smile? In an emotional interview with GMA’s “Tunay na Buhay,” the former “Sexbomb” dancer and Eat Bulaga Dabarkads revealed her struggles as a single mom.
It was the mid-2000’s when Sugar Mercado’s career was in full bloom. She was one of the most popular members of the all-female group “Sexbomb” dancers. Their group’s rising popularity opened many opportunities for Sugar, and soon enough they even had their own soap opera, “Daisy Syete.”
In spite of the promising career ahead of her, Sugar Mercado left showbiz in 2007 to start her own family with the man she loved. During her interview, the 31-year-old revealed that it has been her lifelong dream to have a family of her own.
However, her dream came crumbling before her eyes. In 2015, Sugar was forced to file criminal charges against her husband for “Violence Against Women.” She remained strong-willed throughout the ordeal, but every woman has a breaking point. When asked about the reason why she finally gave up, the teary-eyed Sugar Mercado answered:
“‘Yung nakikita ko na baka ‘pag lumaki ‘yung mga anak ko, gayahin nila ako. Kasi sobrang love ko ‘yung kids ko. So nagtiis din ako kasi gusto ko nang buong pamilya, pangarap ko ‘yon. Hindi ko pinangarap na sira ‘yung family ko na bubuuin, pero hindi ko na kaya.”
Aside from dealing with immense emotional distress, Sugar also had to combat a financial blow. Since she separated with her husband, Sugar received full custody of her two young kids, Olivia and Gabrielle. She became a full-fledged single mom at a young age.
The single mom did everything that she could to sustain her children’s needs. Her main source of income came from selling different merchandise such as clothes, shoes, and even soap. When asked for an inspirational lesson from her story, Sugar was quoted as saying:
“Okay na muna ako sa kids ko tsaka sa family ko. Natuto na rin ako na hindi sagot ‘yung pag-ibig sa guy. Basta masaya ka, masaya ako ngayon. Laban lang, walang susuko dahil habang nabubuhay tayo, may pag-asa.”
