If you think you’ve seen enough bizarre and wondrous things in your life, then there’s a mother in India who has a story for you. Recently it was reported that a mother gave birth to a so-called ‘mermaid baby’. Unfortunately, the mermaid baby lived for four hours before it perished.
It was unclear whether the baby was a male or female because of its underdeveloped pelvis. Its legs were merged, to which the doctors declared that it was suffering from a rare condition called sirenomelia or “mermaid syndrome.”

The mother, Muskura Bibi, bore the child on Wednesday morning, December 6, at Chittaranjan Deva Sadan Hospital in eastern India. She could not afford to undergo pregnancy scans so she only saw her baby’s condition when she finally gave birth. Child Specialist Dr. Sudip Saha said:
“The parents are a labour couple and had not sought proper medication during pregnancy due to lack of money. Lack of proper nutrition and improper blood circulation to the baby from the mother can create this kind of abnormality.”
According to a study conducted in 1992, mermaid syndrome occurs to only one out of 100,000 births. Dr. Saha also shared that the case was a first time in the state and a second-time occurrence in the country. The child specialist said:
“The baby had a normal formation in upper part of the body but below the waist, its legs were fused together. The lower part was not developed completely. We learned the mother had not undergone ultrasound sonography throughout gestation.”
