A new modus operandi has commuters fearing for their lives in their everyday travel. In a report by GMA 7’s “24 Oras“, a robbing incident inside a public utility van was caught on camera and relayed to the proper authorities for investigation.
On January 26, a PUV was going about its usual route in Manila when three men from different pick-up points hailed it. With only six passengers inside, there was more than enough room for the three robbers posing as fellow passengers.
The whole incident was caught on video, thanks to the driver’s camera which was recording at the time. In the video, the first robber hailed the van and boarded it while it was along Vito Cruz. He sat in the back-most part of the vehicle.

A few seconds later, another man calmly got into the van, this time sitting in the middle passenger seat. At this point, nothing peculiar stood out. The video depicted a normal everyday commute scene, with passengers minding their own business.

Less than a meter after the second man boarded the vehicle, a third man hailed the van and occupied the front seat.

While no cellphone rang in the video, the third man who was seated in front pretended to take a call and talk to someone. This fake call was apparently the signal for the other two men at the back to commence the robbery, which took place in under two minutes.

The man in front can be heard threatening the passenger beside him, ordering her to surrender her valuables if she didn’t want to be shot. The other men can be heard making the same orders in the background, effortlessly taking all of the passengers’ money and gadgets.

The robbers even asked them for their phone passcodes, which the passengers gave out of fear. After getting everything they needed, the armed men told the driver to stop the van near the Buendia-Pasay area and drop them off.

All six passengers were left dumbfounded by what happened, with some not being able to hold back their tears. The PUV driver, who was a senior citizen, brought everyone immediately to the nearest police station in Pasay City to help them report the robbery.

However, upon getting to the police station, the Pasay police had to escort the victims back to Manila because they claimed that they did not have jurisdiction over the incident. It was only then that the victims were able to relay the crime that was committed to the Manila Police Department.

According to the police, they have received reports of the same modus recently but were not able to get a proper lead on the cases because they could not identify the suspects. Now, thanks to the driver’s footage of the whole incident, the authorities have a clear lead on who these suspects are.
