Last week, netizens were abuzz over Claudine Barretto‘s post on Instagram revealing that she’s seeing a psychiatrist. In the said post, the award-winning actress was filled with gratitude as she talked about her doctor, Dra. Babes Manalo-Arcena, whom she fondly spoke of. Over the course of their therapy sessions, the two seemed to have built a close relationship, with the celebrity even calling her a “mentor and sister”.
It’s not easy for anyone to out themselves on a platform where a lot of criticism is thrown around easily, even more so for stars like Claudine. The actress’ revelation earned her a deeper respect from her thousands of followers. Indeed, many of her fans thought that she was brave for what she did. However, the question of why Claudine had to seek help from a mental expert was still on the lips of many netizens. Luckily, she accepted the invitation of “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho” to sit down with the TV host and discuss the issue.
According to the Optimum Star, she knew of the possible backlash that she could receive from her controversial photo with Dra. Babes. Yet, she wanted to put it up on the social media all the same as she’s proud to be her patient. Furthermore, the celebrity likes to be transparent to her followers, and her mental illness couldn’t be an exception.
“Ako naman po, ever since I’ve been very, very open that I’ve been seeing a psychiatrist and there’s nothing wrong.”
Looking back on her dark days, Claudine Barretto revealed that she started to suffer from panic attacks and panic disorder in 2002.
“I just felt na parang mamamatay ako, hindi ako makahinga. Parang I was sinking, I was drowning, taposparang lumiliit yung kwarto, nagko-cold sweats akota’s hihimatayin ako. I didn’t know what was wrong, nobody really told me na ‘panic attack ‘yan’.”
She told Jessica that there was a point where she thought that she was going crazy. Whenever people would ask her what’s wrong, the more intense her attacks would get.
Around that time, the death of her former boyfriend Rico Yan rocked the showbiz industry to its core. Away from the public eye, Claudine took the tragedy the worst – revealing that she suffered a panic attack when she was taping with the late Direk Wen Deramas. During their reading, the actress suddenly had cold sweats and found it hard to breathe.
“Pakiramdam ko tatalon ako sa building.”
This is when the director stepped in to tell her to go see a psychiatrist. But, she didn’t then know how exactly would she ask for help.
According to Dra. Babes, who was also present during the interview, what triggered the attack was the grief and humiliation. As a celebrity, Claudine is pressured by expectations from family and fans. Plus, losing the love of her life brought great pain to her.
Years after Rico’s death, the actress disclosed that she still has grief in her heart because she never got to mourn his passing. She buried herself with work, so she would tire herself out and not think about what happened. In her statement, Claudine Barretto said that before she married her ex-husband Raymart Santiago, she tried to leave her ex-boyfriend in the past, “but it was always there”.
Having previously seen three psychiatrists, Claudine was still suffering from the disorder. Then she thought: “What could be better than asking for help from the ‘doctor to the stars’? This is when the celebrity reached to Doc Babes two years ago.
Claudine said she was a victim of the stigma surrounding the issue of mental health, with other critics even going as far as calling her crazy.
“Lahat yun napagdaanan ko. Napagsabihan ako ng baliw. I was proud of myself for wanting to prioritize my mental health. I really needed guidance, I needed health. Iba eh, iba yung pinalabas ng ibang tao. When people say, ay hindi, baliw ‘yan, mentally ill ‘yan, ganyan ganyan… They don’t know the mental torture na pinagdaanan ko.”
The therapy proved to be very beneficial for Claudine Barretto – as both women entered a two-way street of respect. Claudine learned from her psychiatrist and Doc Babes also learned from her patient.
The mental expert gave a very important lesson to the viewers:
“I also have to emphasize na ang ating mga artista, we also have to see them on the light that they are also human beings. They are capable also of going down the ladder. Tao din sila, kailangan din nila ng assurance. At, I’m proud to say that Clau is at the moment doing very well.”
Claudine capped off the interview by giving a message to those who are currently struggling with their own mental disorders.
“I believe you’re all heroes. Ang end goal ko lang naman talaga is that ma-stop yung stigma. It doesn’t really matter, they can say anything they want to say, na mentally ill ako or whatever, it doesn’t matter as long as I saved a life.”
Indeed, it had to take gut and courage for one with such a celebrity-status as Claudine to out herself like she did! Here’s to overcoming mental illnesses; you are all warriors!
