ISANG BABAE ANG KINULONG NG KANYANG SARILING MAGULANG SA MARUMING BODEGA DAHIL AYAW NILA SA KINAKASAMA NITO.

In 2015, the disturbing story of Zhang Qi became a trending topic all over social media after a villager from China‘s Hubei province posted pictures of the poor 24-year-old woman. The villager told the story of how the girl was locked up in a filthy run-down shed and treated “like an animal.”
This is the original version of the story that spread like wildfire:
Purportedly, in 2009 Zhang Qi brought his boyfriend home to meet her family after months of dating. Unfortunately, her parents disapproved of her boyfriend and they ordered their daughter to break up with her boyfriend. After attempting to run away, her parents decided keep their own daughter locked up in a filthy building in Jingjang.

According to the villager who posted Zhang Qi’s photos, the girl was emaciated because she had barely anything to eat or drink. Her pitiful situation was made worse because for she lived in a room full of garbage and waste. She had no connection to the world outside save for a hole in her enclosure big enough to get food in. For six years, she lived in filth without so much as sunlight to keep her warm.

It’s not that no one cared in the whole village. Actually, Zhang Qi’s former classmates reported her situation to the authorities numerous times but police wouldn’t intervene. The authorities say it’s because it’s a family affair, but others claim it’s because the parents are very influential and police wouldn’t dare cross them.

Massive public outcry followed the spread of this story — towards Zhang Qi’s harsh parents, towards other villagers who simply looked the other way and ignored the girl’s situation, and most importantly, towards authorities who let all this happen for six years without any sort of authoritative intervention.
The parents’ pronouncements that Zhang Qi was mentally ill and was only locked up for her own protection irked the public even more. As the outcry grew louder, media and volunteers gathered on the ground to literally appeal to the girl’s parents to let her out to seek treatment. Eventually, the parents were left with no choice but to release the daughter they held captive. Zhang Qi was finally sent to the hospital to get much needed treatment and care.

This is also when the whole story came out, as reported by Shanghaiist. Apparently, Zhang Qi got pregnant out of wedlock in 2009, when she was just 18 years old. Zhang Qi’s parents forced her to have an abortion, resulting in her having a nervous breakdown.
They apparently locked Zhang Qi away in fear that her mental state would affect her teen brother, who was described as the parents’ apple-of-the-eye.
